West System Epoxy 105 Resin is the base material on which all West System family compounds are built. 105 is a clear, pale yellow, low-viscosity liquid epoxy resin that, when combined with any of the West System Hardeners, will cure to a hard, solid plastic that is functionally waterproof and highly resistant to moisture vapour. Based on which hardener you choose, 105 will cure at a wide range of temperatures.
The epoxy resin will wet out and bond with wood fibre and fibreglass. It will also bond well with a variety of metals. Unlike polyester or vinylester resins, West System epoxy does not shrink after curing. It's also much safer to use than styrenated resins as it has a relatively high flash point and no solvent odour.
Thickening:
When used with West System fillers, the resin creates an excellent structural adhesive or fairing compound. Epoxy thickened with adhesive (high-density) fillers makes structural bonds, bridges gaps and also fills voids. When thickened with fairing (low-density fillers), the epoxy is easily sanded and shaped after it cures.
Coating:
105 is also a superb coating material. When applied with a roller, the resin offers excellent thin-film characteristics and will flow out and self-level without fisheying. When combined with West System's 207 Special Clear Hardener, you can create a natural finish.
