Magnesium anodes are suitable for freshwater boats. This is because the alloy tends to protect submerged metals such as aluminium parts better. 

Please note that if an magnesium boat anode is exposed to saltwater, the alloy will react more rapidly. It will also result in a different electrochemical reaction being caused that will cause the creation of hydrogen under the paint of the metal drive surface. Additionally,  with a magnesium anode, you can benefit from a reduced loss rate due to lower circuit potential.
