A manual life jacket will only inflate when the toggle is pulled; activating the sensor that fires and activates the gas bottle, thus inflating the life jacket.

Because of this, manual life jackets are hugely popular with those operating in confined spaces, such as pilots flying over water, as if the worst happens and (for example) you need to make an emergency landing in water; the inflation of an automatic life jacket may hinder your attempt to get out and to safety. On the flip side, if you lose consciousness, the life jacket will not deploy.
