Navigation Lights
Boat Navigation Lights
Boat navigation lights are a vital piece of marine electrical equipment that will help keep you safe in low light, or when visibility is reduced. Navigation lights allow you to see other vessels, and other vessels to see you.
You have a legal responsibility to display lights that are of the correct colour, intensity, location and visibility on your boat in all weather conditions. We often find that boats are delivered with inadequate navigation lights that do not meet legal requirements, so it's vital that you check your navigation lights before you head out.
Different types of navigation lights:
All Round Navigation Lights:
All round navigation lights should be installed at least one metre above your side (port and starboard) lights, and not be obscured by masts or other structures.
Masthead Navigation Lights:
All vessels over 12 metres in length must have a masthead navigation light, mounted at least 2.5 metres above the gunnel, with an uninterrupted horizontal arc of 225 degrees.
Port Navigation Lights:
Port navigation lights are to be placed on the left (port) side of your boat. Port lights must have an uninterrupted light with a horizontal arc of 112.5 degrees.
Starboard Navigation Lights:
Starboard navigation lights are to be placed on the right (starboard) side of your boat. Starboard lights must also have an uninterrupted light with a horizontal arc of 112.5 degrees.
Stern Navigation Lights:
Located close to the stern, stern navigation lights must have a horizontal arc of 135 degrees, with 67.5 degrees on each side of the stern. If you have an outboard engine on the back of your boat, it may be worth mounting the stern light on a mast.
LED Navigation Lights:
LED navigation lights are rapidly growing in popularity as they use less power and have a longer lifespan, in comparison with standard navigation lights.
