Are Self Inflating Life Jackets Reusable?

20th Jun 2023

All life jackets are designed to be reusable. Life jackets use a carbon dioxide (CO2) canister to inflate when activated, and after inflation, the CO2 canister can be replaced using a re-arming kit and the life jacket can be reused.

However, it's important to note that self-inflating life jackets should be inspected and tested regularly to ensure that they are functioning properly. This includes checking the condition of the CO2 canister, the inflation mechanism, and the overall condition of the life jacket itself. It's also important to follow the manufacturer's instructions for re-arming and repacking the life jacket after use to ensure that it is ready for future use.

If a self-inflating life jacket has been activated and inflated, it should be inspected and serviced by a qualified technician before being reused to ensure that it is still in good condition and fully functional.

Do life jackets have an expiry date?

Although a life jacket itself does not have an expiry date, the re-arming capsule that is used to inflate it will. This date is typically around three years from the time of purchase on a new life jacket and is clearly marked on the capsule. It's also worth checking the condition of the CO2 cylinder, as its condition imay vary depending on the amount of use the life jacket has, and where it has been worn - so it is worth regularly checking the cylinder for any signs of wear, in case it needs to be replaced sooner.

Typically, you should get around 10 years out of a life jacket if it is looked after well and stored correctly (in a cool, dry area out of direct sunlight). Naturally, the materials used to manufacture the life jacket will begin to deteriorate over time due to exposure to the elements, such as sunlight, water, and temperature changes. It's important to regularly inspect your life jacket and replace it if it shows signs of wear and tear or damage.
